The CTRON communication control interface specifications, based on OSI, define as system calls the functions to be provided to upper layers by the protocol processing at each layer. The authors discuss the implementation of communication control programs based on these interface specifications, noting the overhead factors involved in realizing a layered protocol, and suggesting ways of speeding up the protocol processing software
