The impact of major I/O system parameters on the performance of RAID-5 disk array systems is described in this paper. It is shown that the system throughput is a nonlinear function of the number of disks per rank, number of ranks in the system, compounded data rate of SCSIs installed between a host and a controller, the size of a controller buffer, the way files are striped across individual disks, and the application dependent read/write ratio
