A vector magnetic field formulation based on variational principles is presented for the hybrid mode analysis of an integrated metal strip waveguide. The H field analysis presented eliminates unpredictable nonphysical solutions through the enforcement of the divergence relationships for the magnetic field. Investigations of the edge effect and convergence are presented for a dual coupled microstrip geometry. It is found that the edge function accurately represents the magnetic field at the perfect electric conducting corners and improves the accuracy of the solutions
