This paper describes a novel implementation route for a wide range of digital single-input single-output (SISO) control laws using application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) technology. It is shown by the design of a fixed structure firmware programmable ASIC 'general purpose' SISO controller that the resulting implementation route offers significant benefits over the more conventional routes such as microprocessor-based or digital signal processor (DSP) systems, by removing the requirement for embedded software. The paper describes the concept, concept design and a simple case study to illustrate its effectiveness.
