For pt. I see ibid., vol. 5, p.111-14 (1993). The paper presents the results of an analysed study on the application of the NGH SSR damping scheme for damping common-mode torsional oscillations that occur in the IEEE Second Benchmark Model, system-2. A unified approach based on modal control theory is utilized to design damping controllers for the NGH SSR damping module. The frequency-domain approach based on eigenvalue analyses and the time-domain approach based on nonlinear model simulations are both carried out. It can be concluded from the simulation results that the proposed NGH SSR damping scheme including the designed damping controllers can effectively suppress the common-mode torsional oscillations.<>
