This paper describes the architecture and implementation of NEC's ATM switching system developed for broadband ISDN. The switch implements an output-buffer type cell-based switching architecture that provides non-blocking, low cell loss, and high throughput properties. The access interfaces supported by the switch include ATM OC-3/DS3/DS1, SMDS DS3/DS1 as well as frame relay DS1. The ATM switch is designed with high redundancy to enhance its reliability. The switch is also built with automatic fault detection and diagnosis capabilities to serve the needs for highly reliable broadband-ISDN services
