The potential of optical-phase conjugation (OPC) to compensate for distortions arising from disersion and nonlinear self-phase modulation has been verified theoretically and experimentally. Furthermore it has been clarified that OPC-based systems are suitable for building transparent ultra-high capacity intercity links, by upgrading the already embedded standard-fibre system. For data rates exceeding 10 Gbit/s similar performances can only be achieved by taking advantage of fibre-optic dispersion equalizers which, however, cannot completely eliminate the degradations from nonlinearity
