A phased array antenna, composed of microstrip patch antennas for scanning a vertical shaped beam over a horizontal range of ±40°, has been developed. A problem in shaping the beam and scanning it over a wide range is how to mount the feed in a small space. In the paper, an application of the parallel feed to the vertical feed system is presented. Further, the active element pattern of the microstrip patch antenna is investigated, and the radiation characteristics of the phase array antenna are estimated in order to use microstrip patch antennas over a wide-range and as an accurate scanning antenna. The analysis is applied to the large scale antenna after it is confirmed by test results using some small arrays
