A large deformation theory of deformable solids is proposed in which the loading path dependency and interaction with electromagnetic fields are taken into account. The distinction between the deformed and undeformed configuration is treated rigorously and the problems of stability of structures in electromagnetic fields enter the scope of the theory naturally. As an application of the theory, the governing equations for the quasistatic deformation of ferromagnetic materials under a magnetic field are derived. By employing these linearized equations in the finite element formulation, the stability of quasistatic deformation can be treated generally
