The interdisciplinary anthropological study of knowledge elicitation (ASKE) project is introduced. The choice of anthropological methodology for the project is discussed, and the relevance of anthropology to knowledge engineering in general is pointed out. Examples are given of pitfalls observed in the knowledge elicitation process, including problems related to both interviewing technique and conceptual approach. Some preliminary conclusions are drawn based on work to date
