A new cumulant-based approach to DOA estimation for independent nonGaussian sources and a uniform linear array is presented. The DOAs are obtained by finding the eigenvalues of a matrix made up from cumulants of the data. As with other cumulant-based methods, the present method does not need the characteristics of the noise when the noise is Gaussian. This algorithm is developed using an approach that leads to a general relation between the cumulant functions and the parameters to be estimated. This general relation gives a common framework for developing other algorithms for DOA estimation. Computer simulation results show the effectiveness of this new method
