The authors propose double smoothers, consisting of the median and Wiener filters, which they call the median and Wiener (MW) double smoothers. It is shown that the MW double smoother is suitable for smoothing a covariance stationary process which is a useful model of images. The statistical analysis and experimental results indicate that the MW double smoother is an efficient edge-preserving smoother that can outperform the individual median and Wiener filters
