An approximate method for the analysis of planar waveguide distributed-feedback lasers is given. Symmetric index grating structures with and without parasitic losses are investigated. Characteristics of a planar distributed-feedback Nd laser are obtained with the help of expressions relating the normalized small-signal coefficient αoMNL, to the output power PPNMout normalized to the saturation power Ps, the normalized volume losses coefficient αMNlossL, the scattering losses coefficient αMLL, and parameters of the waveguide.
