It is pointed out that one of the most important points in designing an automotive electromagnetic actuator is to clarify the relationship between the response time and design factors. For optimum design, the main design factors (dimension, components, characteristics of the material of an actuator, and the applied voltage waveform) are primary concerns of actuator designers. Inducement of an eddy current in the cores and the values of the spring constant also have significant effects on the response time of an actuator. Furthermore, laminated sheets are quite difficult and costly to use for the cores, especially for those with an axisymmetric form. These effects are quantitatively examined by dynamic analysis using the finite element method. Criteria for sectioning optimum design are proposed in view of the structure of cores, and the optimum values of the spring constant and the high applied voltage, using a voltage controlled circuit such as a DC-DC converter and a chopper
