The authors describe processes for minimizing the insertion losses for biconical fiber couplers used as optical switches or Tee or directional couplers. Also described are ways to minimize the joining losses in local area networks. Empirical formulas are derived for the cost of optical fiber, transmitter, and receivers as functions of their dependent parameters
