A scheme for data communication over cellular mobile communication systems that overcomes data losses due to the interruption of the communication when a mobile station is handed over is proposed. A CP/MD/1 queuing model is developed and used to analyze the performance of this scheme. A compound Poisson (CP) is used to approximate the input process from users, and a modulated D (MD) distribution to approximate the service process. Probability generating functions and characteristic functions are used to evaluate the mean queue length, the mean burst delay, and the overflow probabilities. The numerical results show the effectiveness of the scheme and the correctness of the model and its derivation
