Describes a photonic asynchronous-transfer-mode (ATM) switch with an architecture composed of N tunable frequency convertors and N frequency-multiplexed output buffers connected through an N*N arrayed-waveguide grating multiplexer. This ATM switch features a novel output buffering scheme having the best possible performance and causing no splitting loss of optical power.
