The authors demonstrate that light from a CW DFB laser can be converted into a 10 GHz pulse train in an optical fibre using crossphase modulation from copropagating mode-locked semiconductor laser pulses and a polarisation-nulling technique. The 7.4 ps pulses generated by this technique have a time-bandwidth product of 0.4. This technique also performs a wavelength conversion function.
