Khalil, K.M. ; Bell Communications Res., Piscataway, NJ, USA

The author analyzes the burstiness phenomenon in data communications networks and introduces an algorithm for online traffic burstiness analysis. The commonly used methods to measure and model bursty traffic are reviewed. Different methods to implement the proposed algorithm are discussed and general implementation guidelines are provided. Some numerical results obtained through analyzing the traffic from an operational local area network are presented
