The performances of the principal axes (PAX) and surface fitting (SFIT) techniques for registering positron emission tomography (PET) brain scans were compared using computer simulations. SFIT was found to be more accurate under conditions of large scan discrepancy, partial overlap, and limited z-axis coverage. The computationally more efficient PAX method is recommended for scans encompassing the entire brain.<
