During the 1970s, a system was proposed for neutron flux/reactor power measurement and control, i.e., the pulsed ionization chamber (PIC) system. The PIC system is said to provide enhanced performance under extremely severe environmental conditions of temperature and radiation field intensity. The authors examine the question of whether such a new system is needed. PIC methodology is reexamined in the light of state-of-the-art technology and techniques as they apply to reactor applications
