The full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) and the optical confinement factor Γ of optical modes in multiple-quantum-well (MQW) laser structures are calculated as a function of the well width. The calculations are preformed for TE modes. Three wavelengths (0.83, 1.3, and 1.55 μm) are considered, and the number of wells is used as a parameter. Several corrections are included in the calculations, such as the change in the conduction and valence band energy levels due to narrow wells, energy-dependent indices of refraction, and energy-dependent effective electron and hole masses
