The article is concerned with the programming of distributed memory systems consisting of an interconnected network of processors and their associated local memory. It outlines typical characteristics of such systems and discusses the language approaches used for their programming. This is followed by an examination of High Performance Fortran that has been proposed as a basis for programming distributed memory computers.<>
