Birkeland, the author describes Birkeland's electromagnetic gun project and provides details of the so-called Gala lecture at the University of Oslo on Feb. 6, 1903, when Birkeland officially demonstrated his gun. The future potential of Birkeland's gun for mass transport and rocket launches is also examined
