A new multichannel adaptive error-correction system has been investigated for use over noisy time-varying channels. Information is fed at a fixed overall rate over a number of parallel channels, with the amount of information per channel being determined on the basis of channel quality. The system is shown to be superior to that obtainable with fixed-rate forward error-correction systems, and in addition the proposed system is shown to have a performance superior to that obtainable with classical diversity systems operating at the same rate.<>
