The author describes the implementation and practical comparison of two kinds of controller algorithms: proportional integral derivative (PID) and space state. These algorithms were implemented in a digital signal processor (DSP), TMS320C25, for driving a machine-tool axis. For this reason, TMS boards on a VME bus and an environment were developed which consists of different kinds of inputs and a user-friendly display of the response. Many trajectories and paths were also available to test these controllers. The innovative aspect of this work was an experimental comparison between these controllers in addition to theoretical studies. The application of a specific controller depends on the type of machine tool used. Applications on milling, turning, and drilling machines are discussed
