The authors present the requirements specification for distributed hard real-time operating systems used in time-critical, mission-oriented systems. For this purpose the relevant models for distributed hard real-time processing are established based on the general characteristics of distributed hard real-time systems. Following these models the requirements of a distributed hard real-time operating system are specified, and the major concerns in requirements of task scheduling and communication management are examined. Further discussions include the following issues: the operating system support for real-time application environments, and the problems to be investigated regarding next-generation real-time systems
