The numerical mode matching (NMM) method is used to solve the problem of an off-axis electromagnetic point source radiating in a cylindrical medium with an arbitrary number of layers in both radial and axial directions. The solution presented for this nonaxisymmetric electromagnetic field has applications in optical fiber communications, integrated optics, and geophysical exploration. The NMM implemented is verified by comparing numerical results with the analytical solutions available for several simple layered media. The NMM method was used to model electromagnetic well logging tools in complicated formations. The tool eccentricity effects are studied by comparing the nonaxisymmetric results with the corresponding axisymmetric results.<
