The specification and development of a procedural interface for CAD tools, based upon the underlying structure of EDIF, is discussed. EDIF is text format used to describe a design in terms of objects (for example ports, views, cells, etc.) and the relationships between these objects. It is these objects and allowed relationships which form the underlying data model for EDIF and for the procedural interface presented. Within an EDIF description three classes of relationships between objects can be identified: a definition relation, a referencing relation and a relation between members of a list
