A comprehensive mathematical approach to teaching binary arithmetic to students in a first course on the topic is presented. The weighted sum expression to represent signed numbers in 2's complement notation is developed and logically used to derive all the rules for arithmetic operations. 1's complement arithmetic is similarly dealt with. The superiority of the present approach over the conventional approach is pointed out
