Interactive PWB layout: a lost art?

The author discusses research done in understanding the layout process for printed wiring board (PWB) power supplies, in understanding the needs of the power supply layout designer, and in building a CAD system for doping board layout that supports those needs while being unobtrusive to the user. Reasons why existing CAD systems can be ineffective in certain design areas are discussed. A prototype layout editor has been built that rivals the ease and speed of layout done using paper and pencil. The layout editor is based on a model of layout used by designers of power supplies. Results of its trials are also given.<
