The idea of a reconfigurable bus/ring network to accommodate spatial diversity of traffic and allow simultaneous transmission of data frames is proposed. A centralized media-access protocol and switch architecture is developed. In the results of a simulation of a protocol, it was shown that this network was robust over a wide range of station traffic characteristics and exhibited significant improvement in throughput performance over the IEEE 802.X protocol. In addition, the blocking performance of the network was always superior to that of the IEEE 802.X protocol
