The application of the Massey-Omura lock (MOL) to obtain data encryption and digital signatures in intelligent networks is discussed. MOL is a mathematical padlock based on field exponentiation in GF(2m) with normal basis representation. If a special mathematical MOL processor is available, the encryption-decryption rate can be accelerated significantly. Recent results on the analysis and realization of MOL are presented
