Field-induced birefringence measurements of (Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O3 thin-film material showed that the birefringence shift does not obey linear or quadratic field dependence when a large DC electric field is applied. To interpret the electrooptical and nonlinear optical properties of the material under a high DC field, a generalized anharmonic model is proposed. The Hamiltonian of a simplified oxygen-octahedra is solved. The resultant two-parameter formula was used to fit the experimental data of the field-induced birefringence for several materials
