Describes a simple algorithm for reducing the coding complexity of vector quantisation (VQ), exploiting the feature of a vector currently being coded. A proposed VQ of vector dimension 16 can reduce the complexity from 256 codeword searches to 16-32 with a slight performance degradation of about 0.1-0.9 dB
