The authors describe part of the work of the IED research project MIRIAD, `Medical Image Reconstruction Interpretation Display', The project as a whole has a strong interest in volume imaging. The problems being addressed include those inherent in human interaction with these large datasets (presentation, control interface) and also the goal of true multi-modal image interpretation, combining the predominantly anatomical information derived from Magnetic Resonance or X-ray CT images with the highly function-related modalities such as Single Photon emission tomography or Positron emission tomography, as well as referencing these to a gold standard such as a digital atlas derived from the study of normal anatomy
