This paper presents a simple approach for designing planar electromagnetic band gap structures. The approach is based on designing a planar band pass filter at a desired center frequency. A simple modification is introduced to the well known design steps of the filter. This modification allows for specifying the high impedance property of the structure, as well as its stop band, using a circuit simulator. The validity of the proposed method is shown by applying it in designing some novel structures. Simulations using circuit modeling, full wave simulators, along with laboratory measurements are presented
