The TCP protocol has been widely accepted as a de facto standard for reliable transport of application traffic in the Internet society. However, challenges against TCP's performance arose with emergence of wireless network and has also devised various algorithms for improving its performance in the wireless network. In this paper, we cope with spurious timeout among various challenges. One of previous works, F-RTO efficiently treats delay spike which comes from retransmission of lost packets by reliable wireless link layer, but it does not handle delay spike with segment losses efficiently. We try to give a solution to this problem by introducing E-RTO algorithm and evaluate the performance of E-RTO through simulation by using ns-2. In the experiment, we show that throughput and goodput of E-RTO are improved rather than those of F-RTO and E-RTO does not violate its friendliness with other TCPs
