A dynamic bandwidth assignment MAC protocol is proposed to facilitate the upstream channel resource sharing and to support differentiated services over GPON. A new procedure for bandwidth reporting and a novel balance transferring mechanism are incorporated together with efficient bandwidth assignment. Simulated upstream throughput characteristics demonstrate significantly improved network performance.
