This column describes two issues for electromagnetic flowmeters used in open channels: 1) practical aspects of signal conditioning and 2) a new concept of signal processing to be applied in this field. The new signal processing technique uses a least squares (LS) method and provides information about the fluid's flow rate and its level in open channels. We confirmed these concerns by experiments carried out with a laboratory model of the electromagnetic flowmeter.
