While transmission grid assets are more and more pushed towards their limits, the use of WAM systems to supervise and maintain high voltage grid stability has won significant attention. This paper introduces the concepts of WAM systems, it describes stability assessment solutions based on phasor measurement data and gives insight into experiences gained with actual WAM system installations in Europe and Asia. Conclusions are drawn for WAM system design requirements allowing the stepwise upgrading from monitoring to protection and control functionality.
