The Basslink HVDC interconnector is a major Australian energy initiative that will allow the exchange of electricity between the island of Tasmania and the mainland of Australia. This paper highlights some key aspects of the project starting from its rationale, describing critical system design criteria, how the stringent power quality requirements (frequency control, harmonics, flicker etc) were addressed and further portrays related considerations for vital components.
