A novel optical access network with Manchester coded downstream and remodulated NRZ coded upstream is proposed and experimentally implemented in a 20 km standard singlemode fibre network. When the downstream light source is reused for the upstream signal, acceptably small penalty was observed compared to the unmodulated light source case.
