For synchronous direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems, a new criterion based on minimum probability of error (MPE) is proposed for designing decision feedback detectors (DFDs) instead of the conventional minimum mean-squared error criterion. The MPE criterion-based DFD (MPEDFD) tries to minimize the average/conditional probability of error adaptively. Study of bit-error rate and convergence performance shows that the MPEDFDs work pretty well after a short training sequence. Moreover, the modified MPEDFD is applicable for the asynchronous DS-CDMA systems with multipath.
