Global file systems are an alternative approach to the mainstream GridFTP/Globus method of moving entire files around in combination with migrating, grid-aware, jobs. Rather than a standardized peer to peer setup, there is a central facility oriented to providing data services. In this inherently asymmetric environment, powerful data and network facilities are essential, but significant simplifications can result.
