The term next generation Internet (NGI) is increasingly common. Almost every system application protocol and product has a next-generation version. In this paper the fundamental concept of NGI is illustrated and the current situation of the development of NGI in China is comprehensively discussed. The viewpoints on the network framework, communication technology, and protocol and security strategy of NGI are put forward.
