The authors present the design and implementation of the consumer electronic bus (CEBus) physical layer for the twisted pair medium. They cover the development of the two sublayers that make up the physical layer: the symbol encoding (SE) sublayer and the medium-dependent physical (MDP) sublayer. A circuit prototype was built for a twisted pair network. It can also be utilized to implement and verify the CEBus control channel signaling schemes on the various specified communication media. The circuit was realized by using discrete components and was easily implemented on a VLSI circuit. The SE sublayer base clock may be scaled to adapt the SE sublayer to various data signaling rates. A digital signaling scheme that results in a simple transceiver implementation was adopted
