In order to develop a grid computing system in a simpler way, a grid computing framework with spaces (GCFS) is proposed. The framework consists of three layers that interact with each other. The grid application layer provides interfaces for computers to join the grid. At the space manager layer, a space service can be dynamically created or destroyed by the evaluation algorithm. The space service layer coordinates grid nodes in asynchronous mode. Space services and grid nodes all are regarded as computing resources. Task assignment is implemented by two procedures with QoS-based scheduling algorithms. The above ideas have been applied in a group company for the simulation of third generation (3G) wireless systems, and it is found that a lightweight grid computing platform can be realized via GCFS. Finally, the future improvement of GCFS is discussed.
