The MIMO communications system model is presented with reference to actual transmission line measurements on a 5×5 twisted-pair telephone cable. It is thought that such a model could be useful in complementing a fibre optic backbone Internet system since twisted-pair connections to consumer premises are more economically viable then fibre optic ones. This paper shows that a successful implementation of a MIMO communications system for twisted-pair telephone cable is contingent on accurate measurement of the S-parameter, S21, of the telephone cable.
