We present and examine a tree-shaped self-organizing neural network called the evolving tree. It has been designed to efficiently analyze large databases. We show how the system's architecture makes it efficient for these kinds of tasks. We then analyze the system's behaviour under different circumstances. We find that, despite being simple, the evolving tree is a suitable tool for unsupervised data analysis.
